You Did Everything Right. So Why Does Work Still Feel Wrong?

You were told to go to college, get a good job, work hard, and you’d be secure. Instead, you ended up with:

  • Thousands of dollars in student loan debt

  • Workplaces that demand more of you, while offering less

  • Self-care and family time squeezed into early mornings, late nights, and jam-packed weekends

Millennial women are bone-tired of this loop. And they’re looking for an out.

Freelancing Isn’t Transitional. It’s a Viable, Long-Term Career.

Freelancing is often framed as temporary, too risky, or a stopgap in between “real” jobs. In reality, it offers more control, flexibility, diversified income, and long-term financial resilience than traditional employment.

“Freelancing is the most secure job I’ve ever had.” - Satta Sarmah Hightower, author of The Forever Freelancer

Meet the Author

Hi. I’m Satta Sarmah Hightower, a former journalist turned freelance writer and content marketer.

Over the last 12 years, I’ve built a multi 7-figure solo business, using the storytelling skills I cultivated as a journalist to produce content for corporate clients and national publications.

I always tell people I became a freelancer by accident, but I’m now a freelancer by choice. I fell into freelancing in 2014 after back-to-back layoffs, while saddled with $55,000 in student loan debt and persistent doubts about why I had chosen a path with such career and financial instability.

More than a decade later, that “accident” has led to more time freedom, flexibility for my family, and opened the door to financial freedom.

I wrote The Forever Freelancer as a guide for those who are looking for an off-ramp from rise-and-grind culture, institutional policies, and cultural narratives that implicitly and explicitly tell us career success and happy, thriving families can’t coexist.

This book exists because I wholeheartedly believe women have the power to craft careers that better align with what they value — and what they’re worth.
